Disabled person tortured to death in Narail, accused arrested

He was arrested early Friday (July 3) from the Narkelbaria area of Bagharpara upazila in Jessore. Narail Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ajay Kumar Kundu confirmed the matter.

The arrested individual, Akash Biswas (25), is the son of Prabhas Biswas from Uttar Khalishakhali village in Narail Sadar upazila. He is the fourth listed accused in the murder case.

Police said that on the night of June 24, mentally disabled Anwar Hossain (32) was tied to a tree and beaten all night in Gobra village, Narail Sadar upazila, on allegations of theft. Police rescued him in critical condition and admitted him to the hospital.

A case was filed at Narail Sadar Police Station on the night of June 29, naming five individuals and several unnamed others as accused. Later, on Thursday (July 2) morning, Anwar died while undergoing treatment at Khulna Medical College Hospital, and the case was converted into a murder case.

Meanwhile, local residents held a human chain and protest march at Banshgram Bazar in Narail Sadar upazila, demanding the highest punishment for those involved. The march later ended at the Sarkeldanga Madrasa area.

Nabir Hossain, the elder brother of the deceased and the plaintiff in the case, said that because his brother was mentally disabled, he often left home and roamed around various areas. Taking advantage of that, he was falsely accused of theft and brutally tortured to death.

He demanded the swift arrest of all accused involved in the incident and exemplary punishment.
