On July 16, during a speech at the Rathayatra inauguration ceremony in Dhaka's Swamibagh, he fell ill due to extreme heat. Later, he went to rest on the advice of a doctor. The incident was temporary, but it seemed to remind us that this 78-year-old man, carrying the burden of nearly six decades of political journey, is still performing important state responsibilities.
This is his first responsibility as a full minister. He took charge of the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives on February 17. Yet his political journey began in 1969. That is, after 57 years of political life, he has reached the center of state governance for the first time.
More defeats than victories
Mirza Fakhrul's electoral history is not very bright. Defeats in 1991 and 1996, victory in 2001, loss again in 2008. Although elected in 2018, he did not take the oath of parliament. And in 2026, he returned to parliament from the Thakurgaon-1 constituency.
This statistic brings forward an important truth. A person who led one of the largest political parties in Bangladesh, whose political power base was never a personal wave of votes. His main strength was organization, patience, and the ability to survive over a long period.
Two political histories of one family
The history of the Mirza family itself is a reflection of Bangladesh's political evolution.
On one hand, a family member associated with the Liberation War, on the other hand, an important figure in the Ziaur Rahman and subsequent BNP governments. His father, Mirza Ruhul Amin, was a Muslim League politician and later a minister.
But Mirza Fakhrul himself started from a completely different ideological position. While studying at Dhaka University, he was active in the Chhatra Union and later in Bhashani's NAP politics. Then he became involved in teaching, government service, and finally permanently joined BNP politics.
He never fully explained this long ideological journey. As a result, an important chapter of Bangladesh's political history remains unexplored.
The most difficult time was spent in the 'acting' identity
After being appointed as the acting secretary general of BNP in 2011, he effectively became the front face of the party during its most difficult times.
Khaleda Zia was in jail, Tarique Rahman abroad. He represented the party in court, on the streets, in press conferences, and in political reactions.
Numerous political cases have been filed against him, and he has been imprisoned multiple times. However, no effective case of corruption has been established against him. This can be considered an exceptional aspect in Bangladesh's politics.
In the spotlight but outside research
Despite his long political career, there is no significant research, full biography, or academic analysis about him.
This is not just a lack of information about a politician. Rather, it is a limitation of the practice of political history in Bangladesh. Here, history is usually written about top leaders, but the role of second-tier leaders who have sustained organizations for a long time often remains in the shadows.
Strength or limitation?
A long-standing allegation against him within the party is that he is not a fiery street leader. His speeches are restrained, he does not personally attack opponents, and he is more comfortable presenting arguments than creating excitement.
In the prevailing political culture of Bangladesh, these are considered weaknesses by many.
But there is another side. An image of personal integrity, acceptability in diplomatic circles, courtesy towards opponents, and long political experience have given him a distinct identity.
Now the judgment will be on work
Surviving for a long time in politics is certainly an achievement. But history ultimately remembers someone for the work they leave behind.
Today, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has that opportunity before him.
The responsibility of the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives is in his hands. The public's expectations are also very realistic. Just as the people of Thakurgaon want to see improved hospitals, good education, employment, and effective local government, the people of the country also want to see how this long political experience translates into administrative success.
After nearly six decades of political journey, he stands in a position where not the struggles of the past, but the work of the future will become the biggest criterion of his identity.
Whether history will remember him for long as a reliable second-tier politician, time will tell. But this chapter as a minister may determine whether he was just an organizer, or whether he can also inscribe his name as a successful statesman.
