Allegation of torturing a child student with cane and rod on charge of theft in Pabna, teacher handed over to police after mob beating

The incident occurred last Monday (July 20), but it came to widespread attention when a video of the torture spread on social media on Tuesday (July 21) afternoon.

The accused teacher, Sohanur Rahman Sohan (25), teaches at Jamiatus Sunnah Residential Hafizia Madrasa in Pirpur village of Bharara Union in Pabna Sadar Upazila.

The victim of the torture, Mahfuzur Rahman (13), is the son of Sagar Hossain from Natunpara area of Dinajpur Sadar Upazila. He is a residential student of that madrasa.

Locals allege that on Monday and Tuesday, Mahfuzur was beaten multiple times on various parts of his body with a cane and iron rod on charges of theft. At one point, he was expelled from the madrasa.

When the matter came to the attention of locals on Tuesday afternoon, anger spread. In the evening, local residents went to the madrasa, caught the accused teacher, and gave him a mob beating. Later, they called the national emergency service 999 and handed him over to the police.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Pabna Sadar Police Station, Tariqul Islam, said that with the help of locals, the accused teacher and the injured student were brought to the police station and later admitted to Pabna General Hospital.

He further said that on Wednesday (July 22), the accused teacher, Sohanur Rahman, was sent to jail through court under Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. After treatment, the child student was placed in the custody of a local guardian. He also said that the process of taking necessary legal action in this incident is ongoing.
