Researchers have claimed that the study titled 'Microplastics Contamination of Milk and Milk Products in Bangladesh: Characterization, Dietary Exposure and Risk Assessment' is the first comprehensive research on microplastic contamination in milk and dairy products in Bangladesh, its entry into the human body through food, and potential risks.
Microplastics found in all 41 milk samples in Bangladesh
Under the leadership of the study's principal researcher Sanaullah Majumder, a total of 41 samples were tested. These included 17 raw milk samples, 12 samples of liquid and powdered milk from various brands, and 12 samples of dairy products. The samples were collected from different areas and markets across the country and analyzed using modern laboratory technology.
The study found that on average, 156.06 microplastic particles per 100 milliliters were found in branded milk, 93.39 in raw milk, and 70.80 in dairy products.

According to researchers, the relatively higher amount of microplastics in branded milk may be due to contact with plastic at various stages of production, processing, storage, and packaging. Pipes, filters, machinery, gloves, workers' clothing, and packaging materials in production plants could also be potential sources.
Most of the particles identified in the study were transparent and fiber-like. Additionally, various types of plastic polymers including PTFE (Teflon), PET, Nylon-6, Polyethylene, PDMS, PVC, Polypropylene, and Polystyrene were detected.
The study also stated that due to children's relatively lower body weight and higher dependence on milk, the potential rate of microplastic entry into their bodies is higher than that of adults. Particularly, the potential intake rate was found to be highest among children aged 4 to 10 years.
Based on various indices used to assess pollution levels, raw milk has been classified as high risk, branded milk as significant risk, and dairy products as medium risk. However, researchers clarified that these indices indicate the level of contamination and polymer characteristics, and do not prove a direct cause of any specific disease.
According to researchers, microplastic contamination in Bangladesh's milk supply chain is an emerging food safety issue. Therefore, recommendations have been made to reduce the use of plastic in milk production and processing, introduce improved filtration systems, use equipment with lower plastic emission, and ensure regular testing.
