Sheikh Badrul of Awami League led the attack on NCP's 'July March' in Sylhet

On Thursday (July 30), the attack on the convoy of NCP leaders took place as they were leaving after a discussion meeting with the families of martyrs of the July uprising at Golapganj Municipality Auditorium.

Local sources claim that Sheikh Badrul Haque was once involved in Awami League politics. Currently, he is known as close to Emran Ahmed Chowdhury, the general secretary of Sylhet district BNP and member of parliament from Sylhet-6 constituency. Additionally, it has been learned that he is the senior joint secretary of the United Arab Emirates Jubo Dal and close to Mashikur Rahman Mohi, president of Golapganj municipality BNP.

A video captured during the incident has spread on social media. It is claimed that Golapganj municipality BNP president Mashikur Rahman Mohi was seen beside Sheikh Badrul Haque in that video.

A section of locals has alleged that Sheikh Badrul Haque led the attack with the aim of expanding political influence. They claim that although he was involved in BNP politics in the past, he later joined the Awami League and became active again in BNP politics after the political change of August 5, 2024.

Additionally, allegations have been raised that Badal Ahmed, joint convenor of Golapganj municipality Jubo Dal, was also seen in an aggressive role during the attack.

According to locals, several others have been identified by analyzing the video and still images. They include Faiz Ahmed, Tanim and Nahid of Golapganj municipality Chhatra Dal, and Sanai of Fulbari Union Swechchhasebak Dal.

Several BNP workers and supporters, speaking on condition of anonymity, alleged that due to his close relationship with the local lawmaker, Sheikh Badrul Haque led the attack in order to strengthen his party position.

However, no statement was available from Sheikh Badrul Haque, Mashikur Rahman Mohi, or the other accused in this regard. At the same time, the law enforcement agencies also made no official comment about the truth of the allegations or the progress of the investigation.
