Late Thursday (30 July) night, the student was rescued and the accused were arrested in a joint operation by the District Detective Branch (DB) and Pabna Sadar Thana police.
The arrestees are Afnan Ahmad Abir (21), son of late Imran Hossain from Dilalpur Kafil Uddin Para area of Pabna municipality; Rakib Hasan (19), son of Lokman Hossain from the same area; Nazmus Sadat Nafi (19), son of Shariful Islam from Shalgaria area; Bishal Sheikh Sad (22), son of Ujjwal Sheikh from Dilalpur adjacent to the Fire Service area; and Sanjid Hasan Supto (19), son of Nurul Islam from Durgapur village under Aminpur police station in Sujanagar.
The rescued student, Indrajit Das Ray Deb (15), is the son of Proloy Das Ray, a resident of Shibrampur Narikel Bagan Road area under Pabna municipality. He is a tenth-grade student at Pabna Mohim Chandra Jubilee High School.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of District Detective Branch (DB) Rashidul Islam said that on 23 July, Indrajit left home in a huff over a family matter. Later, after searching various places without finding him, his family lodged a General Diary (GD) with Pabna Sadar police station on 29 July.
He said that on the same evening, family members found Indrajit and were returning home. At around 11:55 pm, when they reached in front of Ahmed Rafiq Girls High School on Dilalpur Beltala Road in Pabna municipality, a group of miscreants stopped their rickshaw and kidnapped the student. At that time, the kidnappers demanded a ransom of five lakh taka and threatened to kill him if the money was not paid.
Upon receiving the information, around 12:30 am, DB and Sadar Thana police carried out a joint operation in Shaista Khan's lane area on Dilalpur Beltala Road. When the kidnappers sensed the presence of police and tried to flee leaving the student behind, he was rescued unharmed, and five members of the gang were arrested from the spot.
Police said that after legal procedures, the rescued Indrajit Das Ray Deb was handed over to his family.
In this incident, the student's mother Rita Rani Das Ray filed a case as plaintiff with Pabna Sadar police station. The arrestees were sent to jail through court on Friday morning.
