Bangladesh to become observer member of China-led global AI alliance
Bangladesh has decided to join the China-led World AI Cooperation Organization (WAICO) initially as an observer member. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced this in a statement published on Facebook on Saturday (August 2).

The statement said that among the organization's core objectives are strengthening international cooperation in the artificial intelligence (AI) sector, ensuring inclusive development by reducing global digital disparity, fostering an open, neutral and non-discriminatory environment for the development of AI technology, and cooperating in formulating international policies for the safe and responsible use of AI for human welfare.

Based in Shanghai, China's commercial city, the intergovernmental organization officially began its journey on July 16. At the high-level meeting of the World AI Conference, China initially announced the alliance with 29 countries. Founding members include Russia, Pakistan, Indonesia, Brazil, Malaysia, South Africa, Senegal and several other 'Global South' countries.

At the conference, Chinese President Xi Jinping called for strengthening international cooperation in the development and use of artificial intelligence technology. Without naming the United States, he said no single country should have control over AI technology; rather, it should be advanced on the basis of international cooperation.

Meanwhile, after a meeting in Dhaka last Thursday with US President Donald Trump's special envoy Sergio Gor, Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman responded to journalists' questions about US concerns over the use of Chinese technology in Bangladesh.

He said a new kind of technological divide is being created around artificial intelligence in the world. It is a rapidly growing sector and could become one of the foundations of future civilization. In this context, he also mentioned the newly formed World AI Cooperation Organization and said the United States is still reviewing its position on the organization.

Two days later, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs officially announced Bangladesh's decision to join WAICO as an observer member.
