On Sunday (August 2), the Local Government Division of the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives issued a notification in this regard. He has been appointed as Chairman of the Dhaka WASA Board for three years under Section 7(1) of the ‘Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (Amendment) Act, 2025’.

According to those concerned, this appointment to the leadership of Dhaka WASA is not merely an administrative change; rather, the responsibility of the organization has been handed over to an expert with long-standing research and practical experience in water resource management, urban drainage, flood control and climate adaptation.

Most of Dr. Sabbir Mostafa Khan’s nearly three-decade career has been spent in water resources management, river engineering, flood, waterlogging, urban drainage, and research and engineering education related to environment-friendly infrastructure development.

He completed his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) in 1996, and later obtained a master’s degree in water resources engineering from the same university.

For higher education, he obtained a second master’s degree in civil engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in the United States, and later a PhD degree.

He started his career at BUET as a lecturer in 1997 and was gradually promoted to assistant professor, associate professor and professor. Currently, he is serving as the Head of the Department of Water Resources Engineering at BUET.

Those concerned expect that his research and professional experience in water resources management, urban infrastructure development and tackling the impacts of climate change will play an important role in making Dhaka WASA’s activities more effective and modern.
