Decision to make waterways around the capital navigable, consideration of opportunities for private water bus operation
The government has decided to reopen the waterways around Dhaka. At the same time, an in-principle decision has been taken to consider proposals from interested private organizations and allow water buses to operate on the waterways.

The decision was taken at a high-level meeting held on Sunday (August 2) morning in the special meeting room of the Cabinet Division at Bangladesh Secretariat, chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

At the meeting, the Prime Minister gave necessary directives to the concerned ministries and agencies to make the river routes around Dhaka effective and suitable for transport, as well as to prevent river pollution, improve the drainage system, preserve river navigability, and ensure normal water flow.

In addition, as part of the riverfront development plan, he instructed to plant various species of trees beside the walkways built on the riverbanks. The meeting noted that this would increase the beauty of the riverbanks alongside environmental conservation.

The meeting was attended by Road Transport and Bridges, Railways and Shipping Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam, State Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Sheikh Faridul Islam, Dhaka North City Corporation Administrator Md. Shafiqul Islam Khan, Dhaka South City Corporation Administrator Md. Abdus Salam, Additional Press Secretary to the Prime Minister Atiqur Rahman Rumon, and senior officials of the concerned ministries and agencies.
