Bangladesh's Proposal to Import Gas from Myanmar via Pipeline

Bangladesh's Proposal to Import Gas from Myanmar via Pipeline
To address the country's growing gas crisis, Bangladesh has proposed importing natural gas from Myanmar via pipeline. As a neighboring country, the government wants to further strengthen energy cooperation with Myanmar.

On Sunday (August 2), the matter was discussed in a meeting between Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud and Myanmar's Ambassador Kyaw Soe Moe at the Secretariat. Later, the information was provided in a press release of the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources.

At the meeting, when Bangladesh expressed interest in importing gas from Myanmar through a pipeline, the Myanmar ambassador positively accepted the proposal.

To move the discussion forward, the Power and Energy Minister proposed a meeting at the level of the concerned ministers of the two countries. He said that he would formally invite Myanmar's Energy Minister to visit Bangladesh. In addition, he expressed his interest in visiting Myanmar himself if necessary.

Referring to the proposal for a China-Myanmar-Bangladesh corridor raised during Prime Minister Tareq Rahman's visit to China, the press release further said that if a gas pipeline is established between the two countries, it could play an important role in regional connectivity and energy cooperation.

The meeting also discussed developing long-term commercial relations between Bangladesh and Myanmar and increasing mutual cooperation in the energy sector.

At that time, Myanmar's Ambassador Kyaw Soe Moe said that the matter could be reviewed in detail by arranging a meeting of the Bangladesh-Myanmar Joint Technical Committee.

During the meeting, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam Amit, Energy Secretary Mohammad Saiful Islam and Power Secretary Mirana Mahrukh were present.
