1 killed, 3 injured in mob beating on suspicion of theft in Ishwardi

The incident occurred at around 3am on Monday (August 3) at Mistripada Thandatala village under Sahapur union of the upazila.

The deceased was Manik Hossain alias Sumon (32). He was the son of the late Boyen Mandal of Mahadebpur Azizlatila village in the same union.

Police and local sources said Manik entered Habibul Mandal's grocery store in the dead of night intending to commit theft. As the residence was beside the shop, Habibul heard the sound, came outside and tried to catch him. At that time, the accused attacked Habibul's hands and back indiscriminately with a sharp Chinese axe he had.

Hearing Habibul's screams, his two sons came forward and were also attacked. All three were seriously injured.

Later, local people rushed to the spot, caught the accused and beat him. Manik Hossain alias Sumon died on the spot.

The injured Habibul Mandal and his two sons were admitted to Ishwardi Upazila Health Complex.

Ishwardi Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Asadur Rahman said, being informed, police went to the spot and recovered the body. The body was sent to Pabna General Hospital morgue for autopsy.

He also said an investigation is underway to ascertain the real cause of the incident. Legal action will be taken after the investigation is completed.
