Government wants consensus-based constitutional reform: Home Minister
The government is working to fulfill people's expectations by reforming the constitution on the basis of consensus, said Salahuddin Ahmed, president of the Constitution Amendment Committee and home minister. He said necessary matters will be incorporated into the constitution to ensure a new journey of Bangladesh's democratic system.

He said this while talking to journalists before the first meeting of the Constitution Amendment Committee at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Tuesday (4 August).

The home minister informed that a decision has been taken to begin formal talks with opposition political parties. To this end, a schedule and list of participating parties will be finalised soon. He said although the opposition side was supposed to send five names of representatives, they have not been received yet. However, he expressed hope that they would respond quickly.

He said if opposition representatives participate directly in the meeting and give opinions, they will be considered with importance, and suggestions given in writing will also be accepted. Based on these opinions, an acceptable constitution amendment proposal and report will be prepared.

In response to a question about whether there are any major challenges in the path of constitutional reform, Salahuddin Ahmed said the government does not see the matter as a challenge, but as an opportunity to fulfill people's expectations.

He said the committee's goal is to build a strong democratic state system reflecting the student-public mass uprising, the sacrifice of martyrs, and the nation's democratic aspirations. And constitutional reform will be the first and important step in achieving that goal.

The home minister further said that not only political parties, but people from different strata of society, professional organisations and interested stakeholders will also be consulted gradually. Therefore, no specific timeframe has been set for ending the discussions.

He said an initiative will be taken for an inclusive constitution reform considering the recommendations included in the 'July National Charter' as a political consensus document, the note of dissent, and relevant issues of the ruling party's election manifesto.
