Shafiqur Rahman's tribute to martyrs and call for unity on July Mass Uprising Day
In a message given on the occasion of 'July Mass Uprising Day', the Opposition Leader in the National Parliament and Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, greeted and congratulated the people of the country and Bangladeshis living in different countries around the world.

In a message delivered on Tuesday (4 August), he said that 5 August is a glorious and memorable day in the history of Bangladesh's national life. According to his observation, people from different classes and professions of society, including teachers, students, guardians, youths and professionals, took part in the movement in unity, and at one point it turned into an anti-government mass uprising.

Dr. Shafiqur Rahman claimed that around 1,500 people were killed and about 30,000 were injured in firing by the law enforcement forces to suppress the movement. He also mentioned that many people became permanently disabled.

In the message, he paid tribute to martyrs Abu Sayeed, Mugdho, Wasim and others killed in the movement, and sought forgiveness for their souls. At the same time, he expressed sympathy and gratitude to the injured, the disabled, the families of martyrs and the victims of torture.

The Opposition Leader said the main goal of the movement was to build a state free from discrimination, democratic, based on good governance and with established justice. He claimed that this expectation has not yet been fully realised, and the struggle must continue to achieve this goal.

He further said that in order to uphold the dignity of the sacrifice of the martyrs, a Bangladesh must be built where there will be democracy, social justice, good governance and a non-discriminatory state system.

In the concluding part of the message, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman called upon the countrymen to forget all differences and work together to build a happy, prosperous, humane and sovereign Bangladesh. He also prayed for the peace, prosperity and welfare of the country.
