If needed, we will take to the streets again, and I will too: Asif Nazrul

He made the remarks in a Facebook post on Wednesday (August 5).

In the post, Asif Nazrul wrote, there may be differences and disputes among ourselves, but on the question of Sheikh Hasina, everyone will remain united in the spirit of July. He said, 'If necessary, we will take to the streets again, and I will too.'

Referring to Awami League, he said the party had led the political leadership of the Liberation War—there is no scope to deny this. However, in independent Bangladesh, the party has been ousted from power multiple times in the face of people's movements. He also commented that Awami League should find the answer to why this happened.

According to him, Awami League's political culture has no tendency toward self-criticism or remorse. He alleged that the party has created a mindset that treats the Sheikh family as the owner of the state and sees the Liberation War as a justification for suppressing dissent, which has encouraged their authoritarian behavior.

Asif Nazrul said Bangladesh's other political parties also have limitations. However, he has not seen in any other party the sense of ownership of power and the confidence of boundless lawlessness like that of Awami League.

Referring to the enthusiasm of Awami League leaders and activists over the possibility of Sheikh Hasina's return to the country, he said he has no objection to that. However, he demanded that if justice for the July-August killings and the injured is not ensured, the movement will rise again.

In the final part of the post, he wrote that no one can suppress him or supporters of the movement through intimidation. He said, 'We are alive having conquered the fear of death. As long as we live, we will not fear or forgive those accused of shooting bullets into the chests of Bangladesh's children and youth. July is the name of our rebirth.'
