He gave this instruction during a surprise visit to Haimchar Upazila Health Complex on Sunday (August 9) morning. During the visit, he toured various wards, laboratory, emergency department and other sections of the hospital and observed the patient care situation on the ground. When various irregularities and mismanagement came to his notice during the visit, he asked the concerned officials to be brought to account.
At one stage, Health Minister directed Civil Surgeon Dr. Mohammad Nur Alam Din to be given standby release (relief from duties). After his directive, a fresh discussion has begun regarding the activities and supervisory system of officials responsible in the district health administration.
The Health Minister said that no attention was given to the health sector during the previous fascist government, leaving the sector fragile. He alleged that during that time public money was embezzled by buying medical equipment at inflated prices.
Locals expect that irregularities in this health centre will be identified and effective steps taken quickly. Because, at the upazila level, this complex is the main source of medical care for common people; if mismanagement persists, patients from remote areas suffer the most. Those concerned believe that this initiative by the minister sends a message of strengthening accountability in the district's health service management.
During the visit, Member of Parliament for Chandpur-3 constituency Sheikh Farid Ahmed Manik was present.
