Advocate Yunus Ali Akanda filed the writ petition on Thursday morning (13 August). The writ may be heard next Sunday (16 August).

It is to be noted that Article 70 of the Constitution states that if a member of parliament elected as a candidate of a political party resigns from that party or votes against the party in parliament, his seat shall become vacant. However, he will not be disqualified from participating in any subsequent election.

Earlier, the deadline for submitting nomination papers for the country's 23rd presidential election was fixed until 4 pm today. According to the Election Commission schedule, scrutiny of nomination papers is scheduled for August 16, withdrawal of candidature on August 18, and voting from 2 pm to 5 pm on August 20 in the session hall of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban (National Parliament House).
