Shroud wrapped around head, weapons drill in hand; former Chhatra Dal leader Bappi freed after bond
Allegations have been raised against former Chhatra Dal leader Jubayer Hossain Bappi, alias 'Hoop Bappi', in Ishwardi, Pabna, for holding a public drill with a licensed shotgun while wrapping shroud cloth around his head and body. In the same incident, allegations have also been raised of publicly threatening to kill Mehedi Hasan, former member secretary of Ishwardi upazila Swechchhasebak Dal.

The incident took place on Monday (August 17) afternoon in Ishwardi municipality town. Later, on allegations of creating panic among the public, Bappi's firearm was seized and he was taken into police custody. Around midnight, Bappi and five others with him were handed over to the District Detective Police (DB). Later, after obtaining a bond from their families, they were released.

Local sources, eyewitnesses and police said that around 4:30pm on Monday, Bappi came out on the streets of the town with a licensed shotgun in hand, wrapping white shroud cloth around his head and body. With him were several people, including Sulov Malitha, convener of Dashuria union BNP.

Bappi claimed that he had been threatened with murder. Besides, he came out on the street with the shroud tied around his head and weapon in hand to issue an 'open challenge' against those involved in drugs and money lending in the area.

Later, he went to Ishwardi police station and told police that he had been threatened with murder. For this reason, he came to the police station after issuing an 'open challenge' while openly carrying a weapon.

Meanwhile, learning that Bappi was at the police station, former member secretary of upazila Swechchhasebak Dal Mehedi Hasan, BNP leader Anwar Hossain Joni and several others took position in front of the police station and protested.

Mehedi Hasan alleged that Bappi came from Bokul intersection to Railgate area with a weapon in public with the intention of killing him, and abused him and threatened to kill him. He demanded Bappi's arrest and cancellation of his weapon license.

Later, around midnight, Bappi and five others with him were handed over to the District Detective Police. However, after obtaining bonds from their families, they were released.

Ishwardi police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Asadur Rahman said that on the allegation of threatening to kill Mehedi Hasan, Golam Rabby, manager of his organization, filed a written complaint at the police station. The complaint will be investigated and legal action will be taken.

He further said that whether Bappi violated any conditions of the weapon license is also being investigated.
