China interested in building multi-storey buildings for Dhaka slum dwellers
China has expressed interest in investing about Tk 10,000 crore to build multi-storey buildings for slum dwellers in Gulshan, Korail and Mohakhali areas of Dhaka. It also wants to increase investment in renewable energy, water and waste management sectors.

State Minister for Local Government Mir Shah Alam informed journalists of this after a meeting with Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen at the Secretariat on Thursday (August 27).

The state minister said, besides the housing project, China has expressed interest in large-scale investment in solar power, water and waste management. Cooperation between the two countries is also progressing on generating electricity from waste. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) is scheduled to be signed in Beijing on September 2 in this regard.

At the meeting, Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen said China's relations with the current government have reached a new height. He also mentioned that the relations between the two countries have been further strengthened after Prime Minister Tareq Rahman's visit to China.

Mir Shah Alam said the meeting also discussed deepening BNP's relations with the Chinese ruling party. Both sides also expressed interest in increasing political and economic cooperation.

Besides, the state minister for local government said China is also interested in investing in expanding Chinese language education in Bangladesh and creating a skilled workforce proficient in Chinese.
