Today is the 19th release-from-jail anniversary of Tarique Rahman now that he is prime minister and BNP chairperson.

Tarique Rahman, then senior joint general secretary of BNP, was detained from his residence in the capital in the early morning of March 7, 2007. Later, the BNP alleged that he was tortured during remand.

He became seriously ill due to the torture and was admitted to the then PG Hospital in the capital. After getting bail in all cases, he was released while undergoing treatment on September 3, 2008.

Following his release, Tarique Rahman was taken to London on the orders of the High Court for better treatment. He was accompanied by his wife Dr. Zubaida Rahman and his only daughter Zaima Rahman.

He then stayed in London for a long time. Leaders and activists of BNP and its affiliated organizations observe September 3 every year as Tarique Rahman's release-from-jail anniversary through various programs.
