Bangladesh to lead UN General Assembly after four decades

He will take charge on Tuesday (September 8) through the opening of the 81st session of the General Assembly at the United Nations headquarters in New York. The session's activities will continue under his presidency until September 7, 2027.

On June 2 last, Khalilur Rahman was elected in the General Assembly presidential election with 99 votes in a secret ballot. His rival Andreas Kakovris of Cyprus received 91 votes.

Earlier, Bangladesh's Humayun Rashid Chowdhury served as president of the 41st session in 1986-87. Nearly 40 years later, a representative of Bangladesh has again received this important responsibility.
