WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus handed over the congratulatory letter to Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain at the 79th session of the WHO Regional Committee for South-East Asia in Dili, Timor-Leste on Monday.

WHO congratulates Bangladesh on success in reducing maternal mortality and eliminating tetanus
In the letter, Bangladesh's achievement has been described as an important milestone in public health. It praised the government's strong leadership, effective health policies, reproductive and maternal health programmes, and progress in delivering essential health services to people.
WHO said ensuring delivery and midwifery services by skilled health workers, people's participation and collaboration with various partners also played important roles in reducing maternal mortality.

Besides, the organization also congratulated Bangladesh for sustaining the elimination of maternal and neonatal tetanus over the past decade. Strong national commitment, quality immunization programme and safe delivery practices across the country have been cited as important factors behind this success.
The WHO Regional Office for South-East Asia said Bangladesh's success has also made an important contribution to the collective regional initiatives taken over the past decade to sustain the achievement of maternal and neonatal tetanus elimination.
Recognizing the contribution of Bangladesh's Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and other stakeholders, WHO congratulated the Bangladesh government on this significant public health achievement.
