Local government must be strengthened to strengthen democracy: President

He said this at a courtesy meeting with the administrators of 33 district councils of the country at Bangabhaban on Sunday (September 13).

The President said that local government is one of the main foundations of democracy. District council administrators must discharge their duties actively and vigilantly against corruption and irregularities, and ensure administrative transparency and citizen services.

He directed taking necessary initiatives to accelerate the development activities of district councils. At the same time, he said the government is working to make local government more effective through decentralization of power.

During the meeting, the district council administrators raised various demands, including increasing their status. The President assured them of quick and effective steps after considering their demands. He also recalled the role of district council administrators in the movement to restore democracy and anti-fascism.
