On Tuesday (September 15), a three-member judicial panel led by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, chairman of the International Crimes Tribunal-2, announced the verdict. The other two members of the panel are Judge Md. Manzurul Bashid and Judge Nur Mohammad Shahriar Kabir.
The others sentenced to death are—Awami League Joint General Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, former State Minister for Information Mohammad Ali Arafat, Jubo League President Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash, General Secretary Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil, and Chhatra League President Saddam Hossain and General Secretary Sheikh Wali Asif Inan.
In the verdict, half of the property of the seven persons sentenced to death has been ordered to be confiscated and distributed through the July Foundation among the families of the martyrs and injured in the July mass uprising.
State prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim said that the testimony of 29 witnesses was presented in the case. In addition, audio recordings of the defendants' conversations, forensic reports, and various information and evidence were submitted to the tribunal. The prosecution claims that through this evidence, the allegations brought against the defendants were proven beyond doubt.
Earlier, on August 17, after the arguments of the prosecution and the defendants were completed, the tribunal kept the case pending for judgment.
In the prosecution's argument, it was alleged that Obaidul Quader gave orders to shoot protesters on sight. In addition, allegations were raised against the other defendants for activating the organization's leaders and activists in the field to suppress the movement.
However, the defense denied these allegations. Lawyer M Hasan Imam, on behalf of Obaidul Quader, Nasim and Arafat, claimed that his clients did not kill anyone or give orders to kill. On the other hand, the lawyer for the Jubo League and Chhatra League leaders also rejected the allegations against them and demanded acquittal.
The investigation in the case began in 2025, and the investigation report was submitted on December 7. Later, on December 18, the prosecution filed the formal charges. Nine charges were brought in it. On January 26, 2026, the tribunal framed the charges and ordered the trial to begin. After the testimony of 29 prosecution witnesses was completed, the arguments ended on August 17.
