According to an NDTV report, Sahil was caught while using ChatGPT assistance on a mobile phone in the examination hall. He was accused of uploading a photo of the examination question paper to ChatGPT and seeking answers.

IIT Bombay authorities said no punitive action was taken against Sahil in this incident. The examination teacher and the department head discussed the matter with him, advised him, and informed him that the incident would not negatively affect his academic life.
However, some students alleged that Sahil was threatened with a one-year expulsion over the examination irregularity. They also claimed that this could have forced him to leave the hostel and stay outside the campus.

IIT Bombay said that after the incident, necessary support is being provided to students' friends, classmates, and teachers. Police have been deployed on campus to control the situation, and discussions are ongoing between students and the administration.
According to the institution's information, this is the third student suicide at the Powai campus in the past six months. Police said Sahil's death is being investigated.
