Fish release underway across the country to increase indigenous fish production: State Minister Tuku
State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salauddin Tuku has said the government is conducting a nationwide fish fry release program to conserve indigenous fish and increase production.

He said this while talking to journalists after a fish fry release ceremony for fiscal year 2026-27 at the lake of Bangladesh National Zoo and in water bodies of various important institutions in Dhaka metropolitan city.

The state minister said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman inaugurated the program from Kishoreganj on the occasion of National Fisheries Week. As part of this, fish fries are being released in various districts and upazilas of the country. He said the main goal of the government is to increase fish production and preserve indigenous fish species.

He said that although the population has increased, there is currently no significant shortage of fish in the country. In particular, freshwater fish production is increasing steadily. The government has taken initiatives to provide various assistance, easy-term loans and incentives to encourage marginal farmers.

Regarding safe fish production, the state minister said farmers are being given training and advice to stop unnecessary use of antibiotics. At the same time, to ensure quality fish feed, mobile courts are being conducted regularly to prevent the production and marketing of low-quality feed.

At the event, a total of 250 kg of fish fry were released into the lake of the National Zoo. Among them were 100 kg rui, 75 kg katla and 75 kg kalibaus. The total number of these fish, sized 10 to 15 centimeters, is about 2,575.

Member of Parliament Ferdousi Ahmed from a reserved women's seat, along with officials of various levels of the Department of Fisheries and Livestock and concerned officials, were present at the event.
