He said this on Thursday at an event organized by the anti-hegemony civil society at the National Press Club. Recounting an experience of exchanging views with lawyers, Tajul Islam said that because he performed duties on behalf of Jamaat's lawyers, he has been ‘branded’ as Jamaat.
Giving an example of political intolerance, he said that once he sat at the same table with lawyers of BNP, Jamaat, and Awami League. Later, an Awami League-leaning lawyer present there pointed at him and told another person that they could not sit there if he was present—because he was ‘Jamaat’.
Tajul Islam said that even if one speaks of progressivism, the mentality of not sitting together or exchanging views with people of differing opinions is an expression of political intolerance. According to him, along with political parties, civil society must also come out of such narrowness and political vindictiveness.
