Gazi Salahuddin Tanvir alleges extreme torture in jail and remand

As Tanvir could not speak himself due to illness, NCP central member Yasir Arafat read out his written statement. Tanvir claimed that he was tortured from August 5 to September 15 in prison and on remand, and that he was threatened with the enforced disappearance of his family members if he disclosed the matter outside.

In the written statement, he alleged that he was kept in an unclean cell without light and air in prison and was given multiple injections by unidentified persons. At one stage, his right hand and leg became paralyzed, and later he developed weakness from the waist down, he also claimed. Tanvir alleged that even after being brought to Dhaka in the name of better treatment, several people in plain clothes tortured him.

Dr. Abdul Ahad, member secretary of the NCP-supported National Health Alliance, said that doctors' observations found marks of more than 50 injections and signs of electric shocks on various parts of Tanvir's body. He claimed that Tanvir has no sensation in his lower body, cannot move his legs, and has also lost bladder control.

Doctors said it is not possible to say for certain right now about the cause of these physical problems and future recovery. They demanded an independent and impartial investigation to find out what happened behind the allegations of injections and electric shocks.

Tanvir alleged that a case was filed against him under the Cyber Security Act on August 2 over a statement on social media, and he was arrested on August 5. However, the report did not mention any statement from the relevant prison authorities or police regarding his torture allegations and the doctors' statements.
