The Home Minister made the announcement while speaking at a police medal distribution ceremony in the capital on Saturday (September 26). He said branches of the new unit will be at the metro, division, and district levels. Modern equipment will also be available at the police station and district levels to combat cybercrime.
The minister said large-scale forensic labs and necessary technical support will be kept at the headquarters and divisional levels. Complex cybercrimes will be investigated centrally, and crimes that can be analyzed at the local level will be investigated at the relevant level itself.
Referring to cybercrime as an important part of modern criminal trends, Salahuddin Ahmad said that in various countries, a significant portion of total crime is cyber- and scam-based. Therefore, there is a need to increase specialized capacity in Bangladesh as well to tackle such crimes.
He further said that instructions have already been given to prepare a project for the formation of the cyber security unit and the creation of necessary infrastructure.
