However, Lavrov opposed making any new Western country a permanent member of the Security Council. Criticizing Germany and Japan in particular, he alleged that they are moving toward militarism.
Meanwhile, Mauritius's Foreign Minister Dhananjay Ramful also reiterated support for India's permanent membership. He said India's permanent membership is consistent with its constructive role in global affairs.

Currently, among the 15 members of the Security Council, five countries—China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States—are permanent members and have veto power. Although structural reform requires amendment of the UN Charter, there has long been a deadlock on this issue.
