He said this at a views-exchange meeting with businessmen and relevant stakeholders on the egg production and supply situation at the Secretariat on Sunday.

The commerce minister said, eggs are an important daily essential food item for ordinary people. Therefore, there is no scope to destabilize the market by creating abnormal price hikes or artificial crises. At the same time, the reasonable profit of producers, wholesalers, aratdars and retailers must also be taken into consideration.

At the meeting, businessmen said that due to the increase in prices of poultry feed ingredients including maize and soybean, the production cost of eggs has reached about Tk 11. According to their information, in January the average price per egg at the producer level was Tk 7.91, which rose to about Tk 11.30 in September.

To reduce seasonal price fluctuations, the businessmen recommended arrangements for preserving eggs during periods of excess production, controlling poultry feed prices, reducing obstacles in transportation and marketing, and regularly publishing information on production, supply and market prices. They said the price of eggs may decrease within the next two weeks.

The commerce minister said the government will consider the sector's genuine problems and recommendations with importance. However, if there is an artificial crisis, abnormal obstruction in supply or unreasonable price hike, the relevant agencies will monitor and take necessary measures.

He said the government's goal is that producers get a fair price, businessmen make reasonable profits and consumers can buy eggs at tolerable prices.
