Must work together to prevent misinformation and AI misuse: State Minister for Information

State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yaser Khan Chowdhury has called on all countries of the world, including Bangladesh, to work together to prevent misinformation and misuse of artificial intelligence (AI), while ensuring accurate and reliable information.

He made the call while speaking as a special guest at a discussion meeting organized in the conference room of the Information Commission on Monday, on the occasion of International Right to Information Day-2026. This year's theme was ‘Ensuring accurate information in the digital age; the role of right to information in preventing misinformation’.

The state minister said that in the digital age there is no shortage of information; rather, alongside accurate information, the spread of misinformation and false information has become a major challenge. Therefore, emphasis must be placed on verifying information and disseminating it responsibly, in addition to ensuring the right to information.

He said that before sharing, liking or commenting on any information on social media, it is necessary to verify its authenticity. Media personnel, political leaders, social organizations, and people from all walks of life need to play a responsible role in the use of information.

Yaser Khan Chowdhury noted that the misuse of AI and fake identities is also causing humiliation and defamation by using people's photos and identities. He emphasized increasing public awareness to move society away from such a culture.

The state minister said that if precautions and effective measures are not taken from now, misinformation, false information and the misuse of AI could create a major threat worldwide in the future. He also stressed international cooperation to address this problem.

Dr. Zahed Ur Rahman, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Information and Broadcasting Ministry; Mahbuba Farzana, Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting; Professor Dr. Suman Rahman; Dr. Badiul Alam Majumdar, Editor of Sujan; and Hasan Hafiz, President of the National Press Club, among others, were present at the meeting.

The speakers emphasized ensuring the right to information as well as the flow of reliable information through digital media, preventing misinformation, the responsible role of the media, and raising public awareness to tackle the misuse of AI.
