Fish production must be increased to preserve Bengalis' tradition of fish and rice: State Minister

He said this while speaking as the chief guest at a fry release and discussion meeting organized by the Department of Fisheries, University of Dhaka, on Tuesday, marking National Fisheries Week.

The State Minister said Bangladesh holds a notable position in fish production in the world. To further strengthen this position, the potential of the fisheries sector must be utilized. He also said employment opportunities in this sector are increasing.

Sultan Salauddin Tuku said the government is working to restore the navigability of rivers and streams and make them pollution-free, as well as to harvest fish in the deep sea. He also remarked that if the country becomes capable of deep-sea fishing, it will be possible to make a major contribution to the national economy.

Addressing the students of the Department of Fisheries, the State Minister said there is huge potential in the fisheries sector in the future. To develop this sector and protect fisheries resources, students must give more importance to knowledge and research.

Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University Professor Dr. A B M Waidul Islam, Director General of the Department of Fisheries Dr. Md. Khaled Kanak, and others concerned were present at the event. Earlier, the State Minister released fish fry in the pond of Curzon Hall.
