Science and Technology Minister Fakir Mahbub Anam confirmed the matter and said all necessary preparations for receiving and transporting the fuel have been completed. The fuel will arrive at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka from Russia on a special cargo plane.
Earlier, the fuel was scheduled to arrive on Thursday, but it was postponed by one day and set for Friday noon. Sources concerned said there is currently no complication in transporting the fuel.
Nuclear fuel will be brought in a total of nine cargoes—seven for the second unit of Rooppur and two for refueling the first unit. Russia's state nuclear energy corporation said the entire fuel supply will be completed by December.
Fuel has already been loaded into the first unit of Rooppur. After about a year and a half, one-fourth of the used fuel needs to be replaced. According to the agreement, Russia will supply fuel for the first three years.
The total generation capacity of the two units of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is 2,400 megawatts. Before power generation begins at the first unit, several more important tests will have to be conducted. Even though the safety valve fault has been repaired, the generated electricity will be connected to the national grid only after these tests are successful.
