No option but to let Sheikh Hasina enter India: Dinesh Trivedi

He said this during a question-and-answer session at a session of ‘Bay of Bengal Conversation’ on Saturday (October 3). Dinesh Trivedi said that as an old friend, India did what it had to do in that situation. He also remarked that it is difficult to say what would have happened if the aircraft carrying Sheikh Hasina had not been allowed to land in India.

In reply to a question about how Sheikh Hasina went to India, the Indian High Commissioner said that she was not taken to India by the Indian Air Force or Army. Then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina went to India on a Bangladesh military aircraft.

Regarding sending Sheikh Hasina back to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi said that it is a matter of a legal process, which is ongoing. As the court is involved in this process, it is not possible to state any specific timeframe.

He further said that India’s Ministry of External Affairs has clarified its position on the matter several times. As a democratic country, India respects its own legal system, and the matter of sending Sheikh Hasina back is also within that legal process.
