On-site inspection to assess possibility of reopening Mogolhat Land Port

Minister of Disaster Management and Relief Asadul Habib Dulu MP was the chief guest at an exchange-of-views meeting organized on the occasion of the inspection. This inspection and exchange-of-views meeting were organized as part of efforts to reactivate the port.

State Minister Rajib Ahsan said that if Mogolhat Land Port is opened, it will have a positive impact on trade and employment in Lalmonirhat and the northern region, alongside increasing bilateral trade between Bangladesh and India.

He said that the Chairman of Bangladesh Land Port Authority and senior officials have already inspected the port’s infrastructure and overall situation and prepared a report. He also said that Bangladesh has the necessary preparations to open the port.

The State Minister said that to open the port, a bridge, road, a small station, and necessary manpower are needed across the river. Although the government is ready to build these, work needs to begin on the Indian side and an understanding between the two countries is needed.

It may be mentioned that after the railway bridge over the Dharla River was damaged in the severe floods of 1988, operations at Mogolhat Land Port came to a standstill. If the port is reopened, new possibilities may be created for Bangladesh-India trade, regional connectivity, and economic activities in the northern region.
