The appeal was filed around 11:30 am on Sunday. Earlier, on 30 June last, Tribunal-2 sentenced Inu to 10 years in prison. At the same time, it ordered compensation of Tk 1 lakh each in two charges, totaling Tk 2 lakh.
Eight charges were brought against Inu. Of these, in the third charge, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison, and in the sixth and seventh charges, he was sentenced to 10 years each and ordered to pay Tk 1 lakh each in compensation. He was acquitted of the remaining five charges. Although the sentences are separate, he will have to serve a total of 10 years in prison.
According to the case documents, the investigation against Inu began on 25 March 2025. After the investigation report was submitted on 11 September, the prosecution filed formal charges on 25 September. Later, the tribunal took the charges into cognizance and issued a warrant. After a hearing, the trial began with the framing of eight charges.
In the case, 10 prosecution witnesses and two defence witnesses testified. After arguments concluded on 14 May, the case was kept pending for judgment. The verdict was later announced on 30 June.
The prosecution alleged that in July 2024, to quell the movement, Inu incited through various speeches and meetings and instructed the Superintendent of Police of Kushtia to take action against the protesters. The case states that after these instructions, six people were killed and many injured in gunfire in Kushtia.
In addition, it has been alleged that Inu played a role in various measures to quell the movement, including firing with lethal weapons and from helicopters, bomb attacks, detentions and torture, and imposition of curfews. It is on the basis of these allegations that the prosecution has appealed seeking his death penalty.
