At the meeting, Sarah Cooke congratulated the Information Minister on assuming office. The Minister said the government is committed to ensuring media freedom and has no intention of controlling the media.
The Information Minister said that alongside journalists' freedom of expression, protecting people from misinformation and disinformation is also important. He emphasized taking effective measures against the dissemination of defamatory and misleading information.
The British High Commissioner stressed maintaining ethical standards in journalism alongside freedom of expression. Noting the need for fact-checking to tackle misinformation and disinformation, she said there is scope for cooperation between Bangladesh's Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the UK's Ofcom.
At the meeting, discussions were held on the challenges of social media, ensuring the accuracy of information, responsible journalism and various issues of mutual interest.
