Today is World Teachers' Day
To recognize teachers' contributions, rights and dignity, World Teachers' Day is being observed today, October 5. The day is being celebrated in Bangladesh and various countries around the world through various programs.

In 1994, at the initiative of UNESCO, the formal observance of the day began. Its foundation was laid on October 5, 1966, when UNESCO and the International Labour Organization (ILO) adopted a recommendation in Paris on the dignity, rights and working conditions of teachers. This year marks the 60th anniversary of that recommendation.

In Bangladesh, marking the day, an initiative has been taken to honor 101 distinguished teachers from various levels, from primary to higher education. Each honored teacher will be given 200,000 taka, a crest and a certificate of honor.

Along with developing students' knowledge, values and skills, teachers' role in building the future generation is important. The day is observed every year to highlight the importance of ensuring their rights, working environment, professional development and social dignity.
