If reconciliation is sought, crimes must first be admitted and repentance shown: Information Adviser

He said this while responding to journalists' questions at a press conference on the progress of various government activities held in the conference room of the Department of Information on Tuesday (October 6).

Zahid Ur Rahman said that Awami League supporters are citizens of the country. Taking an initiative for reconciliation with them is not a bad idea. However, for this, a basic foundation is needed from the party, such as admitting past crimes and expressing remorse.

He said that merely admitting crimes does not end legal liability for criminal offenses. In this regard, there is also the matter of taking legal action. Citing South Africa's experience, he noted that acknowledgment of crimes and repentance were an important foundation in reconciliation.

He said that if talks on reconciliation with the Awami League are to be held, first the basic foundation for reconciliation must be ensured by contacting the party's top leadership. After that, discussions on the matter could take place.
