He made these remarks while speaking as chief guest at a discussion meeting held on Tuesday (October 6) at Hotel Sonargaon in the capital on the occasion of ‘National Birth and Death Registration Day 2026’.
Serving the people is the main responsibility of an elected government: LGRD Minister
The minister said that the main goal of government officials and employees and elected public representatives is to serve the people. State power must be used to meet people's needs, ensure rights, and make government services easier.
Regarding birth and death registration, he said this activity is extremely important for national administration. However, there is a major discrepancy between the country's actual population and the data in the registration database. This discrepancy must be eliminated to make the registration system accurate and credible.

He said that using technology alone does not ensure citizen services; the people behind the technology must also be responsible. It must be ensured that no citizen has to go to the Union Parishad repeatedly to obtain a simple birth certificate.
At the event, State Minister for Local Government Mir Shah Alam said that awareness at the grassroots level needs to be increased to make the birth and death registration system more accurate. He also said that the Birth and Death Registration System (BDRIS) will play an important role in implementing the ‘One Citizen, One ID, One Digital Wallet’ initiative.
At the event, awards were given to various individuals and institutions as recognition for accuracy and excellence in birth and death registration. Senior officials of the relevant ministries and departments were present at the event, presided over by Secretary of the Local Government Division Md. Shahidul Hasan.
