He said this while speaking as chief guest at a discussion meeting with teachers of The Millennium University on the occasion of National Teachers' Day-2026 at the office room of his residence in Gulshan in the capital on Friday (October 9). The minister said the tendency to spend huge amounts of money to win elections must change. Politics cannot be directed on the right path without the ideal of serving the people. At the same time, the people also have the responsibility to ensure accountability of public representatives.

Referring to local government as one of the foundations of democracy, he said reform of local government institutions, ensuring services to the people, and holding local government elections at five tiers are important challenges. It must be ensured that people can go to polling centers without fear and vote for their preferred candidates.

Expressing support for holding local government elections on a non-partisan basis, the minister said this could reduce partisan divisions and hostility at the local level. He also emphasized increasing coordination between the government and NGOs for development and public welfare.

Advocate Rokhsana Khondkar, Chairperson of Khan Foundation, along with teachers of The Millennium University, representatives of various NGOs, and officials of Khan Foundation were present at the meeting.
