He said this while speaking as chief guest at a discussion meeting titled ‘Kazi Nazrul Islam: The Universal Voice of Freedom and Humanity’ held at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital on Sunday (October 11). The Ministry of Cultural Affairs organized the event.
The Cultural Minister said, Nazrul is not only a poet of rebellion; he is the voice of freedom, equality, human dignity, non-communalism and universal humanity. His literature and music have inspired people against oppression, discrimination, injustice and communalism. In the context of today's global conflict and intolerance, Nazrul's philosophy is even more relevant.
He informed that the government is observing 2026 as ‘Nazrul Year’ to present Nazrul's life, literature and philosophy to the new generation. On this occasion, various cultural events and poetry, recitation, music, essay and writing competitions are being organized in educational institutions throughout the year. He also emphasized further expanding Nazrul studies in education, media and the international arena.
Speaking as special guest, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaid Islam said that Nazrul's egalitarian and humanist philosophy can play an important role in building a just, discrimination-free and humane society. State Minister for Cultural Affairs Ali Newaz Mahmud Khaiyam said that various institutional and creative initiatives will continue to spread Nazrul's literature, music and non-communal spirit among the younger generation.
At the event, the Rector of the Foreign Service Academy delivered the welcome address. Educationist Professor Dr. Mosharraf Hossain presented the keynote paper. Poet Abdul Hai Shikdar took part in the discussion. Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam gave the vote of thanks.
The speakers said that Nazrul's literature and philosophy represent the common values of universal humanity alongside the Bengali spirit of freedom and liberation. Presenting his creations to the new generation means further strengthening the values of equality, justice, human dignity and harmony.
Government officials, diplomats, educationists, writers, cultural activists and trainees of the Foreign Service Academy were present at the event.
