On Sunday (October 11), Supreme Court lawyer Md. Mahmudul Hasan Mamun sent this notice in the public interest. In it, he called for taking necessary measures, including rationalizing import duties, within 15 days. Otherwise, he said he would file a public-interest writ petition in the High Court.
The recipients of the notice include the Cabinet Secretary, the Secretaries of the Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, the Director General of the Department of Livestock Services, the Chairman of the Bangladesh Trade and Tariff Commission, and the Chairman of the National Board of Revenue.
The notice said that at present, beef is being sold at Tk 780 to 850 per kg in the country. Due to this high price, buying beef has become difficult for poor, lower-income, and fixed-income middle-class families. There are fears that this will also hamper meeting children's nutritional and animal protein needs.
The legal notice claimed that by creating import opportunities and rationalizing duties, it is possible to bring the price of beef within the purchasing capacity of ordinary people. The government has been urged to take necessary measures quickly for this.
