Marking the 136th death anniversary of Lalon Shah, the Lalon Mela and a discussion programme have begun at the Lalon Academy premises in Cheuriya, Kumarkhali, Kushtia. The minister said this in his speech as chief guest at the inaugural event on Monday afternoon. The fair will continue until October 19.
The minister said, under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarek Rahman, the government wants to build a Bangladesh based on knowledge, education, culture, humanity and creativity. An initiative is being taken to establish a ‘Lalon City’ in Kushtia centred on Lalon's memory and philosophy. Alongside this, various initiatives are being taken to encourage folk culture and local heritage.
Speaking as a special guest at the event, Dr. Zahed Ur Rahman, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Information and Broadcasting and Cultural Affairs, said Lalon Shah's philosophy is not only Bangladesh's but an asset of world humanity. In the current time of division, conflict and intolerance, his humanist philosophy is highly relevant. He emphasised preserving Lalon songs, preparing notation and translating them into various languages, as well as reaching his creations to people of all ages, including children and adolescents.
MP Mosammat Farida Yasmin, Superintendent of Police Md. Aminul Islam and former MP Syed Mehedi Ahmed Rumi were present at the event, presided over by Kushtia District Commissioner and District Magistrate Tauhid Bin-Hasan.
At the event, discussions on Lalon's life and cultural legacy and a Lalon music session were held.
Cheuriya's Lalon Akhrabari has become vibrant with the mingling of Lalon's songs, the tunes of the ektara and devotees and admirers of the saint. With the participation of devotees, followers and visitors from across the country, the fair has turned into a gathering of humanity, equality and Bengali folk heritage.
