The forecast was made in a report titled ‘Asia-Pacific Climate Report 2026’ published by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) on Wednesday.
By 2050, 7.5 percent of Bangladesh's people may become climate migrants: ADB
The report said, if human displacement increases due to climate change, it will create severe pressure on the country's housing, employment, and urban services. In this regard, poor populations in the coastal areas of Bangladesh, Myanmar, and India are most at risk. If effective adaptation measures are not taken, by 2100 annual financial losses from coastal flooding in Asia and the Pacific could rise to $739 billion, which is currently about $27 billion.
ADB has recommended investing $9 to $19 billion annually in this region to keep coastal losses at current levels. According to the organization, if this money is spent, losses of $178 to $360 billion per year could be avoided. Yevgeny Zhukov, Director General of ADB's Climate Change and Sustainable Development Department, said, now is the right time to adopt long-term, adaptive, and risk-based solutions to ensure people's safety and keep economic activities running.
