He said this at a discussion meeting titled ‘The Sepoy-People’s Uprising: Looking Back in the Current Context’ at NCP’s temporary central office at Rupayan Trade Centre in Banglamotor, the capital, on Saturday. The meeting was organized on the occasion of the historic 7 November.
Hasnat Abdullah said BNP describes the events of 7 November as a revolution; according to their narrative, on that day, with the participation of soldiers and the support of ordinary people, Ziaur Rahman was freed from house arrest—there is no point in objecting to that. But the 2024 mass uprising involved people from various classes and professions as well as soldiers; despite such broad public participation and achievements, BNP never wants to recognize it as a mass uprising, even as a revolution.
At the discussion, NCP Joint Convener Abdullah Al Amin alleged that BNP has repeatedly betrayed the people’s movement for liberation—whenever people have had the opportunity for liberation through a mass uprising, BNP has reaped its benefits, but later betrayed the people’s expectations. NCP Joint Convener Sarwar Tushar urged BNP not to repeat Ziaur Rahman’s mistake on the Awami League question for a second time.
