Germany Announces World Cup Squad with Neuer's Return
Germany has announced its World Cup squad, including Manuel Neuer. The 40-year-old goalkeeper had retired from international football in 2024. Not only has he been recalled to the squad, but coach Julian Nagelsmann has also designated him as the number one goalkeeper.

Nagelsmann announced the 26-member German squad at a press conference in Frankfurt today. As the sole player from the 2014 World Cup-winning team, Neuer is the only one remaining for this edition. Although Matthias Ginter from that squad a decade ago was in the discussion, the coach did not include him.

During the squad announcement press conference, Nagelsmann stated that Neuer, returning from retirement, is his first choice for the World Cup: 'Everyone knows what kind of player Manuel is and what contribution he can make to the team. We are planning him as number one (the main goalkeeper).'

Despite being ahead in importance and experience, Neuer will not, however, receive the captaincy. Joshua Kimmich will lead Germany in the World Cup. Leroy Sané, the former winger for Manchester City and Bayern, has also retained his place in the squad. Additionally, Bayern midfielder Jamal Musiala has returned to the World Cup squad after recovering from injury.

Also heading to the World Cup are Kai Havertz, who recently won the English Premier League with Arsenal, Liverpool's Florian Wirtz, and Newcastle's Nick Voltemadro. Bayern's 18-year-old forward Lennart Karl has also received his first call-up for a major tournament.
