Regarding the incident last night, Naim Hasan and his family held a press conference this (Saturday) afternoon at their residence in the Chandgaon area of Chattogram city.
At the press conference, Naim Hasan alleged that without any reason, he was pulled out of a CNG auto-rickshaw, suddenly grabbed by the collar, and taken to the police station, where he was detained all night.
Describing the incident, Naim Hasan said, ‘After I got off the CNG, I was told to get into another CNG. As soon as I got in, the police came and grabbed my collar. I was very scared by this sudden incident. Without checking my bag or anything else there, they took me straight to the police station.’
Referring to the OC's behavior at the station, the cricketer said, After going to the station, I introduced myself to him (the OC). After I introduced myself, he told me, ‘Lower your eyes and speak.’ At that very moment, the OC received a call on his mobile. After talking to someone on the phone, the OC's tone completely changed. Then he told me, ‘Brother, you sit down.’ But initially, his behavior was different.
Regarding irregularities in the search process, Naim said, They didn't want to check the bags. The bags remained at the station all night like that. Before I left, on my own initiative, in front of the DC sir, I took out my gloves, helmet, clothes, and even a pin if there was any, and showed them. They made a video of it. So that later they cannot say that my bag was not checked. They didn't find anything even after checking the CNG.
He added, Checks happen a lot in the country, and we have been caught many times too. But there is a rule. If he had no bad intentions, he could have told me that a search would be conducted. But he thought of laying hands on me before even catching me.
Informing that his mobile phone was taken away on the night of the incident, Naim said, After getting my phone back, I immediately called Tamim bhai (Tamim Iqbal). He answered the call and spoke to the OC. When Tamim bhai was talking, the OC was still lying and signaling me to stay quiet. But later, when people gathered at the station and everyone said that I had not tried to escape, they softened their tone. If I had done something wrong, I would have run away!
Meanwhile, Naim's father, former councilor Mahbubul Alam, who was present at the press conference, expressed strong anger at the police's role. He said, ‘The OC understood from the bag that he was a player. Yet, after knowing his identity, saying ‘Lower your eyes and speak’—what kind of courtesy is that? Now the OC is giving interviews and lying that he tried to run away, so he was pulled roughly.’
Naim's father further said, ‘We have learned that a person named SI Kamruzzaman gave false information. It needs to be identified who gave this false information about an international-level player. It must be investigated whether there was any other conspiracy behind this.’
Expressing dissatisfaction with the departmental measures of the police, he said, ‘I heard the accused officer has been suspended. But I have seen such rules in the police for a long time—they suspend someone and then reinstate or promote them elsewhere after a few days. This is not justice. We want them to be arrested and sent to court, and an investigation should be conducted by some other neutral agency on remand to uncover the real incident.’
It was informed at the press conference that besides physical injuries, cricketer Naim is going through severe mental trauma.
It may be mentioned that on Friday (June 12) night, Naim was returning to Chattogram after playing a match in the Dhaka Premier League. On his way home from the airport at night, police officers picked him up, beat him, and took him to the station. Later, at Khulshi Police Station in the city, this national team off-spinner was also harassed.
