Government will ensure trial of real criminals in tribunal: Law Minister

He said this in response to a written question from reserved women's seat Member of Parliament Shawkat Ara Akter during the question-and-answer session on the 20th working day of the budget session of the 13th National Parliament on Tuesday (July 7). The session was chaired by Speaker Hafizuddin Ahmed Bir Bikram.

The Law Minister informed that according to the provisions of the 'International Crimes (Tribunals) Rules of Procedure, 2010', 44 lawyers have been appointed as 'State Defense Lawyers' in 17 cases to ensure fair trial for absconding defendants. Through this, legal representation of the accused in the judicial process is being ensured.

He said that International Crimes Tribunal-1 and Tribunal-2 have been reconstituted for the speedy disposal of cases related to enforced disappearances, killings and crimes against humanity that occurred in July-August 2024. Currently, judicial proceedings are ongoing regularly in both tribunals.

He also informed that the 'International Crimes (Tribunals) (Amendment) Act, 2026' has been enacted to make the judicial process more transparent and compliant with international standards. According to the Minister, the amended law will allow international human rights organizations, including the United Nations, to monitor the judicial proceedings.

He further said that the amended law includes separate provisions for virtual hearings, acceptance of digital evidence, and ensuring the security of witnesses. Alongside, the right of the accused to a speedy trial and the opportunity to meet privately with their lawyer have also been ensured.

The Law Minister informed that the tribunal has also been given the power to confiscate the assets of the accused to prevent the tendency to abscond to avoid trial.

Regarding allegations of harassment of political opponents in cases filed after August 5, he said the government is committed to bringing the real culprits to justice through fair and impartial investigations.
