On Wednesday (July 8) afternoon, farmer Hashem Ali (60) was seriously injured in a head-on collision between a leguna and a battery-powered van at the Shahpur New Mosque intersection in Abdalpur, Kushtia Sadar Upazila. His right leg was severed in the accident. Locals rescued him and admitted him to the Kushtia 250-bed General Hospital.
Following doctors' advice, he was taken to the operation theatre, where he died while undergoing treatment. Later, when relatives went to collect the severed leg, they alleged that it could not be found despite searching the operation theatre. Ultimately, family members left the hospital with the body without the severed leg.
The victim's relatives described the incident as extremely sad and shameful, demanding an investigation into the mystery and necessary action against those responsible.
Regarding the matter, Dr. Iqbal Hasan, Resident Medical Officer (RMO) of the Kushtia 250-bed General Hospital, said that the severed leg was brought to the hospital after the accident and that hospital staff had handed it over to the victim's relatives, as far as he knew. He said he was unaware of what happened afterward. However, if a written complaint is received, an investigation will be conducted and necessary action taken.
Meanwhile, locals have also demanded a swift investigation to uncover the real cause of the incident.
